She’s very good about recommending things only to people who will like them, and it’s gotten to the point that I rarely start a TV show without consulting her first. I generally trust my sister’s suggestions. She really enjoyed it and-knowing that I liked Atwood-passed on her recommendation. Unlike me and the rest of the world, she didn’t start with The Handmaid’s Tale. My sister also read Atwood for the first time in college. She has written eighteen novels and I had read two of them.
I know that novel very well and have considered it from many different angles, and because I know Offred and Gilead so well, I somehow got the mistaken impression that I know Margaret Atwood very well, which isn’t actually the case. That may or may not be true, but it definitely is true for The Handmaid’s Tale. I like to think that I reflect deeply on everything that I read. I also led book club for The Handmaid Tale’s sequel, The Testaments. The Handmaid’s Tale was also the second Atwood book I read, because I led a book club for it. I studied it and wrote several essays about it. Like most people, I started with The Handmaid’s Tale. I first read Margaret Atwood as a freshman in college.
